Folker – Sept/Oct 07

The outstanding one – Great Britain
Lorraine Jordan – A light over there
(Hazelville Music HZ011, www.lorrainejordan.net)
11 Tracks, 48:23, with English lyrics

" The concert at this year's “Venner Folk Spring” showed me almost painfully how much I have missed this woman’s music. A Welsh woman with Irish blood, who lived in Scotland for a long time and who now calls London her home, is a singer/songwriter of a very special quality, because she is blessed with rare talents. In contrast to most of her male and female colleagues she sounds consistently and unmistakably like, well, like Lorraine Jordan. Just unique and distinctive! On the one hand this depends on her voice, which always strikes the right mixture of, at first glance, strong emotions and then playful, gentle ornaments. But this is also due to her distinctive style, that indeed mixes up folk (most of all), blues, rock and pop, but first and foremost emphasizes her characteristical gentle Celtic touch. Thus her new and fourth CD, the first one since 2000, which is lovingly arranged and produced with guitar, bouzouki, fiddle, mandolin, bass, drums and other instruments. And what is the use of the best voice and the most individual sound, if the lyrics cannot keep up with them? But they can. They circle around feelings, around dreams, around thoughts that also address more concrete, general themes. The lyrics convey all this wonderfully in their poetic depth. Songs arise into which one can sink, which one can hear again and again until they become part of one’s own feelings. Anyone who has ever tried to write a song, will be able to appreciate this accomplishment.
Lorraine Jordan is one of the very, very great singers/songwriters. It is about time that she gains the befitting recognition she deserves."
